Each year Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) causes over 4.3 million deaths in Europe and over 2.0 million deaths in the European Union. Overall CVD is estimated to cost the EU economy €192 billion a year. (Source: European Heart Network)

Cancer in Europe affects 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women at some time in their lives. It is estimated that 1,2 million EU citizens die from cancer each year which kills about one in four people in Europe. (Source: Public Health Portal of the European Union)

Tobacco is the single largest cause of avoidable death in the EU accounting for over 650,000 deaths each year. It is estimated that the sickness and death caused by smoking costs EU countries at least 100 billion euro a year, the equivalent of 1% of GDP. (Source: European Public Health Alliance)

Some 30-80% of the adult population in the WHO European Region is overweight. Obesity affects up to a third of the adult population in the region. Almost 400 million adults in the region are estimated to be overweighted and about 130 million, obese. Currently, 80 million people in Europe have some form of allergic disease and their prevalance is increasing. Around 30 million people in Europe have asthma, and as many as 6 million suffer symptoms. Osteoporosis affects an estimated 75 million people in Europe, USA and Japan. 30-50% of women and 15-30% of men will suffer a fracture related to osteoporosis in their lifetime. The total direct costs were estimated at €31.7 billion which were expected to increase to €76.7 billion in 2050 based on the expected changes in the demography of Europe.
