Direct or indirect human activities have altered the composition of the global atmosphere and increased carbon dioxide emissions, driving up temperatures. This has led to what we often observe as more extreme weather conditions and is referred to as climate change.
The pharmaceutical industry contributes to a healthy environment while demonstrating leadership in mitigating climate change. Our activities support the ambition the European Commission expressed through their European Climate policies. EFPIA member companies are committed to:
  • Establish and further develop climate policies based on materiality and impact for individual companies, whilst addressing their entire value chains
  • Annually and publicly disclose progress towards co2 e reduction targets using recognised methodologies, and verified by third parties
  • Increase the share of renewable energy at their facilities and along the global value chains
  • Set science-based CO2 reduction targets
  • Contribute to reduced energy consumption and increased energy efficiency

Industry actions to mitigate climate change

The pharmaceutical industry is actively addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain. Member companies are adopting science-based targets, increasing energy efficiency, switching to renewable energy, innovating greener products, and collaborating globally to drive low-carbon healthcare. These efforts contribute to a healthier planet while ensuring the continued delivery of life-saving medicines.

EFPIA survey on industry emissions

EFPIA’s 2022 Climate Survey highlights the pharmaceutical industry's growing commitment to climate action, with companies setting ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across operations and supply chains. The majority have adopted science-based goals, are expanding renewable energy use, engaging suppliers, and addressing both direct and value chain emissions. The findings show strong sector-wide momentum towards achieving net-zero emissions and supporting global climate targets.
